Application guidance

Can booklet and peel-and-read labels run on a front and back labeller?

Qualify the physical label construction as well as the printed artwork. A wider information area changes the label path, application contact and finished-pack checks.

Booklet and peel-and-read labels may be suitable for automatic application, but a flat single-layer label trial does not establish that capability. The complete label must pass through the reel holder, sensor, drive and peel point without opening or damaging its layers, then remain closed and accessible on the finished container. Lancing should review the actual construction before a machine or option is specified.

An expanded content label (ECL) provides additional information in multiple layers, folded panels or a booklet. A resealable peel-and-read construction and a thick folded booklet are not interchangeable. Identify the base label, added layers, opening tab, hinge and closing feature separately. This guide concerns pressure-sensitive labels supplied on release liner. A non-self-adhesive roll-fed wrap construction uses a different application process and must not be treated as a drop-in replacement.

Application guidance

Start with a construction drawing, not just the closed label size

The converter and machinery supplier need the same version of the label drawing. A change in page count, laminate or tab position should trigger a review rather than an assumption that the old setup remains valid.

Booklet label details to agree with the label converter
Base label and linerRecord the full footprint, liner type, web width, label pitch and gap. Show the edge that reaches the peel point first and the required winding direction.
Thickness profileSupply the maximum built-up thickness and identify where the label changes thickness. A sensor path through a uniform edge may behave differently from a path through a folded stack.
Opening and resealingMark the consumer opening tab, hinge and reseal area. Identify regions that must not be crushed, glued shut, rubbed open or trapped against a bottle seam.
Container panelShow the booklet footprint on a real flat, oval or shaped panel, including corner radii, shoulders, ribs and squeeze zones. Include the pack in its normal filled and capped condition.
Roll presentationProvide a production-equivalent reel, not loose finished samples alone. Include reel diameter, core, quantity and a representative joined section if the supplier permits splices.
Information approvalIdentify the approved artwork and language version for each front/back combination. Packaging-information approval is separate from mechanical application acceptance.

Application guidance

Follow the label from unwind to finished pack

Evaluate the whole route. A reliable trigger signal is only one part of reliable booklet application.

  1. Check passage through the web path. Review clearances and roller contact at the thickest point. Observe whether folded layers lift, catch or move relative to the base label. Adjustments must follow the equipment instructions.
  2. Qualify label detection. Present liner-only gaps and the complete label to the proposed sensor. Include the opening tab and every thickness transition that will pass through its detection line.
  3. Observe release at the peel point. Check whether the base label releases while the booklet remains intact. Record retained labels, double dispensing and premature opening rather than judging only the labels that apply successfully.
  4. Confirm contact on the container. Define where the applicator and wipe-down components may press. The objective is adhesion of the intended base area without damage to the booklet or its opening feature.
  5. Inspect downstream handling. Run the closed label past normal guides, accumulation and packing contacts. Check that its tab does not snag and that the label remains readable and can be opened as intended.

Label-detection technology must be chosen for the label and carrier combination. Leuze’s selection guidance distinguishes optical, ultrasonic and combined approaches, including booklet constructions. Detection suitability alone does not prove that a complete applicator can transport and apply the label.

Combine a plain front label with an extended-content back label

The acceptable result is a complete, correctly paired pack, not two independent counts of labels dispensed.

A twin-head layout allows the front and back rolls to be evaluated separately. The booklet head may need different clearances, detection, dispensing and contact conditions from the branding-label head. Confirm each head’s supported configuration before assuming that independent positioning means both can handle any construction.

Paired packCheck that both artwork versions belong to the same product and market. Record a pack with only one label as incomplete, even when that label is correctly placed.
Use after applicationAgree when to inspect adhesion and opening/reclosing behaviour with the converter. Include the real storage and handling conditions relevant to the product.
Stops and changesRepeat the finished-pack check after a reel change, controlled stop and recipe change. Separate material-related defects from setup or artwork mismatches.

Booklet-label questions to resolve before ordering

Can the normal machine speed be assumed for booklet labels?

No. A speed demonstrated with a flat paper label cannot be transferred automatically to a booklet construction. Label stiffness, thickness, release, contact method, container control and inspection can each change the usable rate. Specify the required sustained output and agree a trial with the actual front and rear rolls.

Is a peel-and-read label the same as a tamper-evident seal?

No. A resealable information label is intended to open for access to its content. Tamper-evident behaviour is a separate packaging requirement with its own design and validation. Do not treat a booklet tab or reseal edge as proof of a tamper-evident function.

What happens if the booklet opens during application?

An opened booklet should be treated as a trial defect, not pressed shut and counted as a successful sample. Record whether opening began in the reel, sensor, drive, peel or wipe-down stage, then review the construction and contact path with the label converter and machinery supplier.

Can an inspection camera read the hidden booklet pages?

A camera viewing a closed pack cannot confirm information hidden inside a closed booklet. Define the visible checks it can perform, such as outer artwork, code, closure and placement, and use a separate approved control for internal page content and version identity.

What samples are needed to assess an extended-content label?

Provide production-equivalent rolls, a construction drawing, filled and capped containers where that matches production, the matching front label, approved artwork versions and the required output. Include difficult formats and define acceptable opening, resealing, placement and downstream presentation before the trial.

  • Container samples with the intended closure and fill condition.
  • Marked opening tab, hinge, allowable contact zones and final label positions.
  • Target sustained output, reel-change frequency and inspection requirements.
  • A list of pack and artwork variants that must run on the same equipment.
