How to choose a front and back labelling machine

A practical guide to choosing between automatic twin-side labelling, compact twin-side labellers and top/bottom label application.

1. Start with the container

The first selection point is the container shape. Flat, square and oval containers usually suit front/back labelling because two separate faces need clean label placement. Round containers can also use front/back labelling where two separate labels are required instead of a wrap-around label.

2. Confirm label material

Paper labels, film labels and transparent labels behave differently. Clear labels often need a specific sensor arrangement so the machine can detect the label edge reliably. Label gap, backing material and roll direction should be checked early.

3. Check handling and accuracy

For good label alignment, the machine must control the pack through the application point. Side guides, top hold-down belts, wipe-down method and conveyor stability are important for taller or lighter containers.

4. Match output and automation level

A compact twin side labeller can be suitable for lower-volume and space-limited projects. An automatic twin side labeller is better for continuous inline production. Top and bottom labelling is a separate route for cartons, trays and flat products.

5. Plan line integration

Consider conveyor height, direction of travel, coding, inspection, reject systems and how the labeller connects with filling or capping equipment. These details affect both quote accuracy and installation planning.

Best next step: send a photo of the container, label artwork dimensions, roll direction and target output so the correct machine route can be shortlisted.
